The Feliza Bursztyn School is conceived as an urban link that integrates, through its design, the neighborhood dynamics and the serenity of a landscaped public space in Bogotá.

trategically located between a serene park and a dynamic neighborhood of the Colombian capital, the project faced the architectural challenge of reconciling two seemingly opposite needs: total openness to the urban environment and the privacy essential for learning in a school. The site, situated on an important pedestrian path connecting key points of the city, demanded an intervention that would not interrupt the flow of citizens, but rather articulate it. The main challenge consisted in designing a building that would function simultaneously as a safe haven for students and as a civic space for a community in need of meeting places.

To address these premises, the spatial concept was inspired by 15th-century public architecture and Arabic and Spanish references, which master the art of balancing intimacy and outdoor life. Morphologically, the school is configured as a large, permeable bar. This volume acts as a street wall, opening on its western side toward the park and on the eastern side toward the neighborhood, facilitating physical and visual connections through plazas at both ends.

The functional heart of the project is the central "Urban Courtyard." From this core, a system of corridors and stairs unfolds, connecting fluidly with interior gardens and terraces—key design decisions to ensure natural light and cross ventilation in all spaces. To resolve the conflict between public and private use, a clear vertical hierarchy was established: the ground levels house the community areas and open directly onto the plazas, inviting civic socialization, while the upper levels shelter the classrooms, laboratories, and administrative areas, ensuring concentration.

The choice of construction systems and materials reflects a firm environmental commitment and an engagement with Bogotá's brick-dominated identity. Local construction techniques that dialog with the surroundings were prioritized, complemented by solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. In this way, the building itself functions as a pedagogical tool that promotes ecological awareness.

Thanks to its spatial flexibility, the Feliza Bursztyn School adapts to contemporary educational methodologies and operates as a vibrant cultural center outside school hours. Its true impact lies in having blurred the boundaries between the school and the city, promoting social cohesion and a sense of belonging among residents. The project leaves a legacy of an infrastructure that not only educates its students but also cares for and revitalizes its environment, paving the way toward a more sustainable and conscious urban future.
