Feng Shui House

This  14,000 sq. ft. luxury residence was designed as a retreat for the mind, body and soul, and conceptualized completely based around Feng Shui principles.

As an ancient art and science dating back to 3000 BC, in literal translation Feng Shui means "wind" and "water." In traditional Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with cultivating good health and good fortune – the principals of which were deeply ingrained into every design decision for this home located in Toronto, Canada.

The result is a balanced and harmonized modern environment that is anything but traditional. Perfect for a busy family of five that loves to entertain, zen-inspired elements flow across the home’s multiple stories, including: 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a home gym and personal spa thanks to a warm, minimalist and modern (yet meticulously detailed) aesthetic.

Tomas Pearce Interior Design was completely guided by the principles of Feng Shui: from the overall space planning, placement of doorways, furniture, and programming features, to the materiality, accessories and art that adorn this home. The firm’s goal? Ensure good energy flow, a strong connection to nature, and a balance of each of the five elements (earth, metal, water, wood, and fire) to help homeowners and guests feel more balanced and harmonized within the space.

Step through the front doors of the home and you’re instantly greeted with a flowing waterfall feature. As flowing water symbolizes an abundant flow of wealth and good fortune, the waterfall ensures that each and every guest is greeted with the possibility of abundance. Custom curved leather chairs clustered in a set of four also encourage conversational flow in the main entryway. Look left of the front door and you’ll spot a modern meditation room, complete with surround sound speakers for guided meditation, dimmable LED lighting, and sliding glass and wooden doors that when closed, create a certain element of privacy, but when left open, ensure a connection with the surrounding environment.

As the homeowners wanted to incorporate multiple spaces for entertaining, Tomas Pearce also programmed each of the main and lower level entertaining focused areas to be located facing the backyard. Spanning from the sunlight-drenched open concept kitchen, spacious dining area and cozy breakfast nook to a family room complete with a large (Feng Shui) fireplace, each of these spaces enjoys views that bring natural elements indoors. Each room was also designed to encourage the free flow of people and energy, while still feeling distinctly delineated aesthetically. The dining area features a custom wooden ceiling wrap and waterfall-inspired lighting pendant. The main staircase of the home creates connection.

In addition to entertaining spaces, equally important were areas where the homeowners could re-balance and focus on health and wellness. A large indoor swimming pool opens up into a spa area, featuring a steam room and shower. The 1,200 sq. ft master bathroom acts as a private oasis, with a large soaker tub, double entrance shower and a mix of mirrors and contrasting shapes. The dedicated gym space incorporates bamboo artwork. Nature-inspired art is also found throughout the space, depicting the five elements.
