‘George’ is a carefully considered single-level addition to an existing weatherboard home in the heart of Fitzroy. The project reimagines the rear of the dwelling, balancing respect for the original Victorian character with a contemporary architectural expression.

The client brief centred on two key ambitions: to capture and maximise natural light within the main living areas, and to create a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces. In response, the addition opens generously to the rear yard, drawing northern light deep into the plan. Carefully positioned glazing, high-level windows, and a restrained material palette amplify daylight throughout the kitchen, dining and living zones, transforming what was once a dark and inward-looking layout into a light-filled, open family home.

The new volume is expressed as a distinct yet complementary form. Charred timber cladding wraps the addition, providing a rich, tactile counterpoint to the existing weatherboard façade. This material strategy clearly delineates old from new while maintaining a dialogue between the two.

‘George’ demonstrates how a modest intervention can significantly enhance the quality of light, space and connection in a compact inner-city home honouring its heritage while confidently embracing contemporary living.
