galeries lafayette in jakarta

plajer & franz studio as Architects

Spend one day in paris… while being in jakarta! Galeries lafayette, the legendary department store and symbol of french art de vivre, has finally arrived on the indonesian retail horizon. located in pacific place, one of the most upand coming areas in the heart of jakarta, the department store is an inspiring fashion temple. more than 300 international brands spread on four floors reflect the classic and modern french chic. the exterior design and store concept have been developed by berlin based architecture & design studio plajer & franz studio with the idea to bring a touch of parisian feeling to indonesia.

One day in paris… is the leitmotif of the design concept for galeries lafayette in jakarta. the unrivaled flair of the french capital is visible and sensible in every corner of the 12,000 sqm large space. typical parisian elements such as building facades and the eiffel tower are interpreted in an accessible but warm way. plajer & franz created a modern fashion temple that reflects the ‘mix and match’ philosophy of the galeries lafayette brand. a modern interpretation of the eiffel tower presented as a huge vertical element next to the staircase, makes an impressive and powerful statement right at the entrance. unlike in europe the landmark of the french capital enjoys great prestige in asia and brings about a highly estimated value. the “coupole” – an emblem of the great architecture of the parisian department store - is also respectively celebrated within the store design for galeries lafayette in jakarta. it reapears as an over-sized ceiling and lighting element on all four floors marking the crossing points between various segments and highlighting the DNA of the brand.

A further creative link to paris is reflected by the so called “indoor-facades”, which are double-sided indoor walls made of sandblasted glass and mirror glass. these reflect the french flair by displaying alienated sketchy motives of parisian building facades and streetlamps. at the same time they have the role of separating various brands from each other and in this way creating a kind of display window for each one of them. the materials used in-store are selected adequately in respect of the varied segments - from casual to luxury. for the various elements reflecting the brand’s DNA and creating a brand statement the plajer & franz design team used a lot of bronze and printed glass. however, red as one of the CI colors of galeries lafayette draws a continous line throughout the entire department store making its strongest statement in the eiffel tower. natural stone and oiled wood have been used for the floors creating a natural look while beeing robust accordingly to the demands of a department store.

Generally the store architecture creates a scene for the product and the brand “galeries lafayette”. its DNA, identity, mission and vision are put to the fore while setting a framework for the multiple and diverse sub-brands. the galeries lafayette department store in jakarta has emerged in a partnership between galeries lafayette and indonesia’s leading fashion retail company mitra adiperkasa (MAP).
