Genovar’s Hall

644 West Ashley Street, the old Genovar's Hall, has a rich history for the city. Once called "Lenape Bar", a local speak easy, it hosted some oft he most well known singers and artists of the day, including a young blind piano player named R.C. Robinson, later known as Ray Charles. This design sought to bring back that rich history by converting the derelict structure back into a piano bar and lounge/restaurant. The original unreinforced brick structure required the design of an interior steel skeleton frame to support the upper walls. Structural steel posts were intended inside the recessed storefront giving the illusion that the upper masonry floors are floating. The remaining existing structure was proposed to be cleaned, primed and painted, and the brick cleaned and repointed. A new metal roof and skylight competed the design to bring this historic gem into the 21st Century.
