The extension is an elongated structure positioned parallel to the main building. To create a sense of cohesion, the new building draws upon key architectural elements of the existing structure—such as enclosed and outward-opening courtyards, internal building lines, materiality, and overall design language.

The urban context and access routes to the new building complement the main entrance of the existing facility. Entry is possible both directly from Sürther Straße and via the large foyer of the main building. Beneath the library’s bridge-like structure, users and students are guided across a forecourt that leads into a spacious, multi-level foyer.

Here, all floors are visibly interconnected by a central air space. The single-purpose gymnasium is located adjacent to the existing sports halls, allowing external users to access it without entering the main school grounds.

To make the transition between the existing sports halls and the new gym as inviting as possible, the gym’s façade was designed to be fully transparent. The façades facing the enclosed courtyard are also largely glazed, enhancing the sense of openness and connection.
