Located on a prominent corner of Gladstone’s main street, the Gladstone Library in Oregon embodies a design vision rooted in flexibility, sustainability, and community connection. A design collaboration between Johnston Architects and Opsis Architecture, the 6,216-square-foot library transforms a tight urban site into a flexible, light-filled, welcoming third place for the community.

The building stands out with a striking perforated metal sunshade that reduces glare while maintaining external views, inspired by the textures of water ripples on the surface of the nearby Clackamas River. Clerestories provide indirect daylight that brightens the interiors, and large windows connect the library to the surrounding neighborhood.

Prioritizing flexibility in a compact footprint, the library’s layout is open yet purposeful, with user-centric areas designed for diverse age groups and needs. A cozy children’s space features movable shelving, and a dedicated teen area, flexible study rooms, and meeting spaces allow for easy access to library technology and resources such as their seed library and makerspace. An interior courtyard, accessible from the children’s area, offers a peaceful outdoor space with stone benches and greenery, providing a quiet moment in the fresh Pacific Northwest air.

The library features clear sightlines, providing staff visibility across the entire facility. Warm wood finishes and acoustic control measures ensure the library is welcoming for visitors of all ages, abilities, and populations. LEED standards guided the design of the project, incorporating passive solar heating, daylighting, and natural ventilation to increase the building’s sustainability measures.

Led by four female architects across both firms, the Gladstone Library design team worked closely with the community to ensure the library reflects what residents wanted most: a modern, friendly space that feels like it belongs to all.
