Architect Thomas Bailey and the client Jonathan, had an immediate connection upon discussing the site on the Tasman peninsula at Koonya. Jonathan, after commissioning Thomas for a house and a series of smaller landscape interventions on the neighbouring acreage, Jonathan announced he had purchased the subject site and wanted a small space as a creative retreat from the main house.

Thomas and Jonathan walked the land collecting buzzies on their shoes, and nailed stakes into the location Thomas selected. A site that opened the way for a an extremely open building. This conversation created an opportunity for an open existence that waxed and waned with the fluctuations of the day. Jonathan spoke of a book he would write and Thomas brought his lifetime of experience of the area along with the assurance of his capacity to realise a building with firmness.

Thomas' knowledge of the micro-climate informed the design process significantly, during colder periods of the year, low cloud cover forms in the evening, holding warmth of the day. This particular phenomena gave the Architect confidence to pursue a courageous response to thermal comfort.  The structure was intended as two planes, to place the client between.  The idea was for the structure to recede, and to let the landscape be the experience of the house.

The practice of Roomll has always been aware that it will be measured by that which manifests. As such its relationship with industry is only shadowed by its affection for place.

The building is obviously a learned response to the great glass houses of modernist architecture, while adding a Tasmanian vernacular interpretation of the typology. Learning that passively designed architecture, which can be tuned to conditions is comfortable in a temperate climate.

As the fourth commission by the same client, the close friendship, understanding, and shared discernment led to an open and intuitive response to client needs where little was said but a great deal was understood.
