David and Sara, a young couple from Downtown Chicago, approached the Corner team with an important request. They had been planning a kitchen remodel in their apartment for quite some time but couldn’t find a reliable contractor. David came across Corner through Google Maps, Sara looked at the company's available designs, and so they began their partnership.
David and Sara knew exactly what they wanted to change in their kitchen: to make the room bigger and more spacious and modernize it with new appliances and convenient functionality. Sara found one of Corner's kitchen designs, Rebel, on a website and suggested they remodel the kitchen like this. David was initially hesitant, as modern kitchens are traditionally done in white, beige, or gray.
"I fell in love with this design at first sight because of its softness," Sara stated. "The color of the kitchen was very appealing and bright, and I convinced David until he finally agreed."
Once the couple settled on a kitchen design, Corner began working on the layout. Together, they discussed the changes that needed to be made to the space and decided where and what features would go.
The original Rebel kitchen appealed to Sara because of the color. She wanted her new kitchen to be bright, playful, and vibrant. That's why she chose painted MDF boards for the kitchen cabinets in a unique green shade from the NCS palette. The super matte finish adds softness to the color, making the cabinet design smooth. The material is also soft to the touch and anti-fingerprint.
The idea David and Sara had for the new kitchen was that it should be practical and functional despite its small size. With this in mind and with the expertise of the Corner team, they came up with kitchen organization and storage solutions.
Above: The Fisher & Paykel built-in refrigerator is covered with the same material as the kitchen cabinets. This allows it to blend seamlessly into the furniture line and become part of the cabinetry. The push-to-open mechanism for opening the doors is easy to use and great for keeping the minimalist look of the kitchen.
The remaining wall section was transformed into a functional pantry. A system of drawers of varying sizes and capacities was installed inside. They form the storage of essential items and products that David and Sara wished to keep in one place.
Above: The interior of the kitchen island features six large drawers. This makes the island a highly functional piece of furniture. Simple lines and additional elements create a seamless look fit for a modern minimalist design. The kitchen island includes the best organizers, such as a wooden cutlery tray. Its flexibility is what makes it amazing. It can fit any amount of cutlery.
David and Sara wanted the island to be the centerpiece of the kitchen, and they got it. Covered on all sides with a Dekton Aura countertop, it looks elegant and forms the border between the kitchen and the living room. The absence of barstools eases the transition between rooms and avoids unnecessary clutter and noise.
Above: The countertop and backsplash are made of the same material, which makes the design even more elegant and streamlined. In this way, the two main design elements are highlighted: the Dekton stone, with its unique engraving and solidity, and the painted matte fronts of the cabinets, which create a harmonious combination of green and white.
Above: The upper cabinets feature under-cabinet LED lighting strips. Their purpose is to brighten up the workspace by shining light directly onto your counters from the opposite direction of the overhead lighting. This under-cabinet lighting improves the look and adds a sleek, modern touch to the overall design.
Above: The recessed handles on the cabinet doors are designed to be "hidden" in their shape and design. They were crafted to resemble the authentic "handleless kitchen cabinets" style. This design is another defining feature of the modern minimalist kitchen look. The handles give the cabinets, what can be described as, a touch of "simple elegance".
The new kitchen design met David and Sara's goals and exceeded their expectations. The kitchen is no longer just a separate room. It is an integral part of the whole interior. It is a functional unit with many practical solutions and is attractive and stylish. This kitchen is a joint achievement for David, Sara, and the Corner team, the result of their close working partnership.
“We love cooking and living in this space; it's beautiful," David shared. "Every morning, when we make our coffee here, it feels like a great centerpiece for our family to gather around."
