In an ancient stone building, with magical spaces featuring high ceilings, large windows, and vaulted cross arches, we were asked to design the offices of the Jerusalem Development Authority. The building itself, a stunning representation of Jerusalem’s rich architectural history, posed a unique challenge. Because that’s how it is in Jerusalem—there’s no development without the existing, and beneath the existing, there’s always another layer, and another one. Each stone in the walls carries the story of the city, and it was our task to ensure that the new design would respect and elevate this legacy.
With a focused decision to preserve the old and classic Jerusalem essence, even the new elements added are subtle and quiet, with great respect for the monumental spaces. The design integrates seamlessly with the structure, enhancing its historical beauty while incorporating modern functionality. The public space in the office is open and inviting, with responsive benches and seating areas filled with calm and tranquility, designed to foster both collaboration and personal reflection. Every detail was carefully chosen to create an environment that brings together innovation and tradition, providing inspiration and a productive work routine.
The office is bathed in light, with natural sunlight streaming through the large windows, illuminating every corner. The high, classic walls in white served as a perfect canvas, tolerant enough to allow other colors to blend in harmoniously. The exceptional spaces elegantly carry the unique furniture, high-quality carpentry, and items scattered throughout the office, each chosen to complement the space’s character. The result is a harmonious balance between old and new, offering a workspace that is both timeless and forward-thinking.
