Haworth-Castelli Great Spaces

My first touch with the space that would become the “Haworth-Castelli Creative Center” was really illuminating: melancholic offices for long abandoned, repetitive and dark rooms, spaces where technical and economic function had been dominant over any idea of form and identity. Exactly the opposite of what the designers Brusa, Cancellotti, Montuori and Scalpelli had tried to express in the Palazzo delle Scienze of E42 (the Universal Exhibition of Rome, which never took place because of the war).

Then an idea had instantly gained ground: liberate and expand this space until it becomes landscape, talk to its monumental proportions encouraging a dynamic fruition through different views and perceptive modalities. To achieve this goal, it was crucial to use advanced technologies as a tool for allusions and contaminations between nature and artifice.

Beginning from an iridescent and evocative "sky", both acoustic screen and light source with color shifting effects. Even the design of the glass floor is suitable for a metaphorical reading: stretch of water, wave, oasis. The texture of light makes it, however, a strongly integrated element in space, where the allusion to nature is always implied and never figurative.

This ongoing game of references to the natural landscape has a very specific purpose: to interpose between architectural shell and product exhibited an intermediate level, open to new narrative and interpretative possibilities, and therefore, to new relationships.

The essentiality of the wood flooring, as well as the neutral tones of the walls are avowedly "background". The "figures" are the products and the works on display: usable, observable from every angle, really approachable. The only exception to the neutrality of the materials is the glass surface of the red waiting area, where the white skin of the bodies that embrace the central area has been like “carved out”.

But there, where we are greeted and invited to come in, the power of color can really make us feel like in the eye of the storm: ready to be launched into the perceptive orbit of the objects that invade the space without ever fill it.
