In the heart of the Ensanche de Barcelona, in a Listed building built in 1907 by the architect Arnau Calvet i Peyronill, is this apartment, which by received grace, has not altered its original distribution, although some finishes of ceilings and floors.
The past comes our way in every corner and the comprehensive reform project starts from the premise of maximum respect for the existing historical / artistic elements and, as far as possible, the recovery of some of said elements that have been hidden / altered. in the previous rehabilitations. A balance has been sought between respect for their previous lives and the demands of a contemporary daily life.
The entrance hall, a generous space typical of the flats of the Ensanche Barcelonesa at the beginning of the 20th century, projects us into the corridor: a 20-meter long axis that connects all the rooms of the house. This corridor has been used to distribute all the facilities. It is in this space that the original ceiling still exists during the works, tearing down the existing false ceiling. For this reason we designed an open cornice that leaves the vision of the original ceiling and at the same time hides the air conditioning ducts (aerothermal) and the trays that support the electrical and water installations. This void in the new cornice is used to place the indirect lighting of the distribution spaces.
The day area is solved by generating a single space with the presence of a structural buttress that is used to structure the circulation between kitchen, dining room and living room.
To make a functional and ergonomic kitchen, two rooms have been put together. The physical trace of the wall that separated the spaces is left and this element is used to characterize the space for the kitchen. This wall is a hanging volume from the original ceiling that transforms into a vertical cut, a void, in the front panel of the kitchen. This panel supports and increases the aesthetic function of the kitchen and its composition. Meanwhile, around the kitchen island, people chat and cook with friends, in a space that combines the vertigo of past times with the present and projects itself into a future that has not yet been written.
The gallery space is used to create a study area. Right in front of the kitchen is the technical room of the apartment (pantry, laundry room and facilities). The rest of the apartment is structured with three bedrooms, two toilets, a dressing room and a storage room.
