Twenty-three new rooms with a beautifully selected interior decoration, which combines contemporary design pieces with modernist details. Our new Alexandra rooms remember cosy spaces unique to modern homes looking always for an environment balance that creates personality.

Borrell Jover Studio signs this refurbishment project of an existing floor of the Alexandra Hotel in Barcelona (5th floor) that includes 14 rooms in the existing building and 9 in the adjacent building of Rambla de Catalunya chamfer. It is a building with a great richness of spaces and with finishes characteristic to old-fashioned buildings from the beginning of the century in Barcelona. This is why the combination of modernism and avant-garde design has been present in the project at all times. The new floor keeps the same distribution as the rest of floors: central corridor and doors at both sides. Corridors have been conceived as a space that invites to silence, walls covered in wood and light colour stucco, with a light diffusor that lights up the carpeted floor.

In all types, bathrooms have been modified depending on different criteria already applied on the 8th floor. Visual communications with bedrooms are closed, removing fixed windows between both spaces. Partitions between toilets and bathtubs have been also removed and replaced by shower trays with made to measure built in seats and grab bars, improving accessibility. In flooring and walls, a microcement coating has been used keeping continuity of surfaces. New Silestone countertops have also been installed and cupboards are coated with a mirror above the washbasin.

In the rooms new finishes, less vulnerable to continuous use, have been incorporated. Entrance areas are coated with Fenix tiles resistant to knocks and other walls with Vescom vinylic paper, making it easier to clean and preserve. In addition, isolation panels have been built to receive televisions, improving acoustics between rooms, and new wood heads of beds lacquered in the same colour as the head of bed wall. In the bedrooms of the main building existing parquet flooring has been replaced by an oak wood parquet placed in herringbone, and in the bedrooms of the chamfer modernist hydraulic flooring is kept, as well as all the decoration in the ceilings of early 20th century.

Lighting emphasizes this comfort feeling. It is achieved by combining lights of the head of bed with floor lamps, both designs from Louis Poulsen, VL38 model in black colour. In the hotel enlargement we had always the intention of preserving modernist elements from the adjacent building and combining it with contemporary design. The purpose was to respect and preserve original mouldings from ceilings or the existing hydraulic mosaic to bring to the enlarged area the essence and tradition of the city of Barcelona.
