It is a 3-storey house for 6 ― two generations, where total floor area measures less than 100㎡. We focused on modifying compact space in particular to the human-scale, based on the height of the family members averaging at 150cm. The site covers rectangle area of 8m clearance and 11m depth. This project was required to have a parking space on the South, facing 6m-wide road. We aimed a “setting” that adapts the “character” while considering the complicated governing regulations and requests of the client, often encountered in such small spaces.
Three layers of 6.4m × 6.4m square plan and undulated façade represents the difference between the lifestyle of two generations. Alteration of 0.3m in each floors interprets the gap of these “settings”. In addition, stacking up wooden frameworks associating with the number of differences modifies the process of this circumstance. 10m-wide arc drawn out from the midpoint of the entire building height gives gently undulated façade to cover the difference of the two dwellings upside down.
The fluctuating form of the façade responds to the issue and protects the good relationship between the two generations by giving motion to have mutual understanding to their lifestyle difference. Moreover, a certain degree of communication and distance stimulates healthy relationships, while the ambiance of this extensive space provides sense of comfort.
