House SCH

House SCH is located on one of the hillsides surrounding the city-center of Stuttgart. Designed as a multi-family house, it contains 2 apartments and a studio on 4 levels; on the street-level a studio with a small courtyard, on the garden-level a 3-bedroom apartment and on top a duplex apartment, inhabited by the clients. The trapezoid shaped floor plan is related to the shape of the site, creating a building with a thinner side towards the garden and a wider side towards the street. Following the curved line of the building plot, the street facade is bending and therefore integrating the building along the curved line of the street. On the street level, 2 double parking garages are defining a front court, leading to the common entrance lobby.

The entrances of all 3 apartments are directly connected to the lobby. A wide open stairway under a huge skylight is leading to the duplex apartment on the second and third floor. Surrounding a void, which could serve for a possible elevator in the future, the staircase becomes the central spine of the whole house. It ends on the roof level in an open living space, surrounded again by trapezoid shaped terraces, which allow an overview of the city and the nearby river valley. White surfaces, custom-made furniture and a rough wooden oak floor characterize the overall interior, creating an atmosphere of calmness and warmness. The building is cladded with black metallic anodized aluminum plates, towards the side facades more or less closed, towards garden and street with huge, ceiling-high openings. Because the building regulations demanded a perceivable roof-floor with at least one 70 degree slope, the design of the house merges facade and roof on one side in order to get a continuous surface. At the same time, a so called butterfly-roof with slightly sloped ceilings creates an atmosphere of a roof space. Depending on the light and reflection of the facades, House SCH can always be perceived very differently.
