The new Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Lloyd Kiva New Welcome Center is designed to demonstrate IAIA’s commitment to sustainable design. The IAIA Lloyd Kiva New Welcome Center provides office space for various critical departments within IAIA: Human Resources, Academic Recruiting, Institutional Advancement, Information Technology, Finance, Sponsor Foundations, and the President’s Office. Additional spaces included are gallery space to display student artwork as well as donated artwork and an IT/Tech Center to aid students and staff with technical issues. The facility is adjacent to the east end of the Science and Technology Building which was also completed by Dyron Murphy Architects. Windows throughout the facility provide natural lighting and maximize views to the exterior.
The prominent location of the facility on the IAIA campus makes the Welcome Center the “face” of IAIA and a focal point for visitors. The exterior design of the facility respects the existing architecture of the campus and provides a cohesive design, but also makes a statement for the IAIA campus using contemporary materials as well as forms. The location also honors the solar paths and keeps the east/west axis open with a direct view from the ceremonial courtyard to the Hogan building located on the east side of the campus.
