Invercargill House

Located in Southland, New Zealand, Invercargill House is a contemporary take on the local vernacular for modern family living, designed by Mason & Wales Architects. The rural-styled house has a traditional gable roof form that creates a grounded setting. Visitors are greeted under a cantilevered porte cochere that defines the strong entry.

The house is arranged in a free-flowing plan interconnected by a corridor spine separating active and passive uses. These active uses are then orientated and presented to the surrounding landscape and the warmth of the Southland sun, while the occupants are grounded in their sense of place and use with a lowered living space, further reinforced by the warmth of a log fire. The natural palette of materials in the interior and on the exterior provides for a timeless elegance.

Founded in 1863, Mason & Wales Architects is the oldest architectural practice in New Zealand. The practice has established and maintained a reputation for quality design and the preparation of industry-leading technical and construction documentation.
