The spatial reversibility of an existing school building from the 1960s forms the basis of the design for the primary school “De Iris” in Uccle. By not placing the requested vertical extension on top of the existing building, but over it, B-ILD won the design competition. As a result, the existing building did not have to be demolished or renovated and the existing structure could remain untouched. This creative approach not only turned out to be cost-effective, but also limited the ecological impact.

During the design process, we have been very conscious of the delicate balance between school activities and the location in a residential area. The building is positioned in such a way that the playground is separated from the living environment by the L-shaped volume.

In addition, the playground was designed as a public square that can also be used for events and a multi-purpose infrastructure was provided, such as a seating area with an arena and canopy. In this way the school not only “takes” but can also give something back to the neighbourhood.
