A box filled with ideas, a treasure trove of thinking beyond the ordinary. Kanso House is a modern residence that translates simplistic lines and a warm, natural palette into a traditionally Zen space. A confluence of traditional Japanese design styles brings harmony to the space, creating an environment of peace and relaxation that serves as an inner and eternal sanctuary from the stresses and strains of life in the outside world.
Programme / Functions / Use of Space
“The idea of creating one’s personal space and achieving it is the most satisfying aspect of the project.” Following the client’s brief, which was heavily influenced by Japanese design, it was essential to develop and display the culture of minimalism, blending it with the essence of traditional Japanese design. In this context, personal spaces were treated like memorabilia—much like placing a souvenir on your desk after a vacation or proudly framing your child’s first scribble on the living room wall. Following this thought, the design concept embraced the creation of a space that is dynamic in nature. Sunlight travels through to the farthest corners, allowing the user to constantly recreate their personal habitat, bringing both energy and calm to the entire space.

They say harmony lies close to nature, and once you bring nature into your home, life begins to move in a balanced symphony. Inspired by the colors of nature—the pale blue of the sky, the dark grays of rocks, and the golden beige of a sandy beach—Kanso House is a habitat born from our surroundings, with details that evoke the essence of nature.
Interior Spaces / Details / Materiality
Each material is palpable and captivating, allowing the user to feel the textures within the space. The soft floor encourages walking barefoot in the calm room, where one can enjoy the subtle play of light and shadow created by sunlight entering through green screens. Kanso House successfully narrates a story that feels deeply personal yet collective, offering a serene and unified experience as one enters the space.
