Kien

This was an interior design of a merchant house in central Kyoto for Kien, a shop that upcycles kimonos that are no longer used to breathe new life into them as dresses.

The in-fill of the merchant house, which had been renovated many times, lost the original attraction of the building and ran contrary to the brand’s concept.
We peeled off the outer layers that had been slathered on unthinkingly and reconstructed it so that the original quality of the building and the newly added interior would align closely with the brand concept.
We suggest that we gave it a sense of continuing to exist in this space, rather than merely restoring it to the form it had before.
