Kiosk Tegelbacken

The kiosk on Tegelbacken creates entirely new public spaces in the heart of the city: two green park squares, a renovated waterfront quay, and new seating areas in an attractive location by the water. Together with the city and the landscape architects, DinellJohansson investigated the potential for incorporating a food kiosk with outdoor seating into the park. The firm then designed the building and prepared the documentation for the construction tender.

The proposal for a new kiosk at Tegelbacken is based on the idea of creating a safe and welcoming meeting place that complements the park’s new design. Warm overhead lighting, illuminated façades, and activity inside the kiosk help make the area feel safe in the evening as darkness falls. Activating all sides of the building through various functions, openings, and decorative lighting is essential to creating a cohesive and welcoming environment.

The kiosk is strategically positioned at the centre of the park, with the staff entrance and waste room facing the street and Centralpalatset. A large display window faces southwest, welcoming park visitors along the park’s central path and lawn.

To the north of the kiosk, beneath the existing trees, an area is designated for outdoor seating. To the south, an accessible toilet serves customers of both the kiosk and the outdoor seating area. A serving hatch on the gable end of the kiosk serves this outdoor area, while the opened window shutters, with their perforated holes, provide surfaces for signage and service-related fittings.

The vertical timber façade consists of two different cladding systems. Around the larger openings, overlapping tongue-and-groove boards with straight edges are used, while more closely spaced sections feature battens over vertical boarding. All timber cladding is painted with brown linseed oil paint.

The roof is made from reclaimed standing-seam copper sheeting, salvaged during the roof replacement at Kungsholmen Fire Station (1930).
