Elounda Hills is a sophisticated and eco-friendly destination with world-class infrastructure. Located on the west coast of Mirabello Bay, it comprises a collection of residential and leisure establishments spread over a 90-hectare site offering unrivaled views. This setting of timeless allure is conceived as a year-round destination, allowing visitors and owners to connect with one of the world’s most sought-after landscapes, suitable for diverse lifestyle options and ensuring the best of contemporary Mediterranean island living.
For such a vibrant and exclusive community, it was important to create zones of relief and connection for residents and visitors. We were invited to embed a series of activation hubs along the 2km coastline, designed to facilitate social and cultural activities within the development. Situated at the borderline between land and sea, vessel and harbor, natural and man-made, we have nestled the communal areas of what is conceived as a village, transforming the traditional town square into a linear sequence. Just like any town square sits at the heart of the community and represents its social core by hosting multiple events, we imagined the coastline as a stage for year-round gatherings and a connection to water trajectories and to the community itself.
At the same time, the town square is usually a congregation and a summary of the principal aspects, styles and characteristics of a village that inspire and evolve as the town grows organically. We consciously followed this notion of a square, and decided that for the architectural language of the beachfront we would sample the congregation of styles and vocabulary that appears in the rest of the development, in order to echo its design values, promote its ethos and identity, as an active storefront for it. The coastline is activated by inserting punctuation points-cores of diverse densities and intensities, in an oscillating rhythm. The interplay of natural and man-made structures suggests a symbiosis that celebrates nature as a trademark of the development.
Moving along the most untouched rock formations of the coast, Kyklos Cove emerges as the second punctuation point along the waterfront. Benefitting from the natural ravine that sculpts the slope, the development reaches the water with a resort and its own beach club and marina.
As suggested by its name, the waterworks are introduced in a circular formation that ensures protection and a refuge for boats from the oncoming waves. Circular flat planes, as opposed to building volumes, slice the dramatic natural formations of the ravine in a playful interplay that softens thanks to the curvilinear outlines that are in keeping with the natural qualities of the landscape.
