The small, forward-looking educational institution in Buchs is located on the edge of the town, with views of the surrounding natural landscape and the mountains. This setting is reflected within the building through interwoven learning landscapes.
The youngest group is taught on the lowest level, while the upper floors accommodate progressively higher educational stages. In this way, each student moves through the building from bottom to top over the course of their education. All levels are connected by a centrally arranged stepped seating staircase.
Flanked by a school library, this space allows children and young people to expand their knowledge independently. As a playful element, a slide connects the upper floors. At the top level, the staircase continues outdoors, linking the interior with the rooftop exterior space. The stepped seating on the roof terrace serves as an open-air classroom and can be activated as a learning landscape.
The auditorium is located on the ground floor, directly complemented by the school kitchen. Throughout the building, niches for retreat and learning areas are distributed. In the basement, the “Brütwerk” is housed—a workshop used for craft and technical instruction, but also available to students for independent projects outside of class time.
Materiality and architectural language correspond to the diversity of the educational offer. Differently sized wooden shingles on the façade and freely composed window forms subtly symbolize the uniqueness of each child.
