“How do you build a house for a family with a limited budget?”—this was the initial question behind the project. At the time, it was unusual to base the design on the client’s investment framework and to approach realization in a cost-conscious manner. Today, “design to cost” has become the norm.

The Prosa development consists of 14 semi-detached houses arranged in a horseshoe around a shared courtyard. They are characterized by their economical construction. For the sake of simplification, each building is based on a one-meter grid. Thanks to the prefabrication of timber panel elements, the main structures were erected in just eight days. For the first time in Switzerland, timber was used for firewalls. The uniform construction method, the harmoniously paced arrangement, and the lively volumes with mono-pitched roofs create a rhythmic architectural language.

All façade openings throughout the development are standardized to two sizes. Inside, the load-bearing external walls keep the floors free of subdivisions. Only the staircase structures the space, positioned identically in each house. The clients developed their specific spatial programs and the use of all surfaces together with the architects. Through the active involvement of the owners prior to construction, a strong sense of community was able to emerge early on.

To this day, the Prosa development stands out for offering a high degree of individual living quality within an established neighborhood context.
