A family holiday home on a steep east facing ocean front site in a resort village on the popular south coast of Kwazulu Natal.
The house is positioned as high up as possible on the site, so as to maximize the views of the ocean over the small forested dune in front and through the trees to the north, where the main bathing beach is found. The environmental laws pertaining to the distance of structures from the highwater tide mark on coastal properties, also played its part. The front lawn area with the few retained milkwood trees is used for children to play and for buggies and boats to park.
The house is used by the extended family as well as the family together during school breaks, hence the 5 bedrooms and the large open plan living areas spilling out onto a enormous covered terrace There is a weather protected boma tucked into the slope behind the house. The terrace has a jacuzzi and braai, plus ample sitting and el fresco dining space for sheltering during the muggy, windy and drizzly inclement weather.
The house is on three floors with garages and services plus staff on the lowest floor/basement tucked into the hill. The open plan kitchen/living entertainment on the ground floor and all the bedrooms on the top floor. This was also planned as such to assist with security when only a few of the were in residence.
The materials used were chosen to provide the least possible amount of maintenance.
It is home to many in the family, bringing back wonderful memories of times spent together.
