LGM landhuis house

The client's request was to build a country house according to the American model. After typological research, some interesting elements from this architectural style were retained. BLAF started working on this. The house is built in a wooden frame, and apart from the roof, it is covered completely with padauk planking. This uniform materialisation ensures a sharp marking of the building volume. It makes the house look compact and allows the designer to organise a free facade composition. The interior of the house has been developed in function of different atmospheres and experiences. The circulation is placed at the centre of the house. A generous staircase with ‘vide’ leads along window openings providing changing views. The covered terraces are higher than the surrounding meadow landscape and deeper in the façade, giving perspective to the views and a sheltered feeling in the openness of the surroundings.

Another important starting point for this design is the location and the approach of the site. The building plot is located in a rural area surrounded by meadows, in a bend at the end of a long straight road. The building is visible from afar in the area and is approached slowly. Because of the monolithic appearance and materialization, and because of the oversized chimney and window openings, the dwelling is recognizable from far away, looks compact (despite the total living area of 354 m²) and provides an ever-changing scale feeling when approaching.
