Apartment in the building of the court department of the Hermitage

This is an apartment located in the very center of St. Petersburg, a five-minute walk from the Summer Garden.

A special feature of this property is the large brick vault that completely covers the entire apartment. Initially, almost a quarter of the vault was covered with plasterboard, and the apartment consisted of two small adjoining isolated rooms and a fairly spacious corridor. It performed only a transit function, while occupying a significant area.

Before the start of the design, the main tasks were formulated: to free the vault as much as possible from the partitions that cut into it, form an entrance group, create a full-fledged daytime zone, allocate a place for a bedroom and a work area.

The volume of the room is divided by a load-bearing wall into two unequal parts in a ratio of 1 to 3. In accordance with this, the apartment was divided into two functional zones: 2/3 was occupied by the daytime zone and 1/3 by the private zone.

The day area included a spacious entrance hall, kitchen and living room. I wanted to visually separate the hallway, but we did not build walls to the ceiling, this would violate the visual integrity of the vault. We have solved this problem by forming a functional box with a height of 2.5 m. On one of the lateral sides it adjoins the load-bearing wall. All other sides face different areas of the room and perform their respective tasks.

Namely: from the side of the hallway, a large wardrobe is built into the box, from the side of the kitchen - a refrigerator, from the side of the living room on the wall of the box there is a TV. The volume of the box organically fit into the room, solved the problem of zoning and storage.

The private area includes a bathroom and a bedroom. When entering the bathroom, there is a sink on the right side and a toilet in front of it. The shower area is located in the back of the room and is fenced off from the sink by a partition.

Sleeping places are organized in the back of the room, and due to the extended window sill, a comfortable workplace is formed by the window.
