Rex Lotery designed this house in 1959 as the Calvet Residence, in Trousdale Estates above Beverly Hills. Philippe Naouri Studio reimagined it at large scale with the architectural firm Studio Tim Campbell, completing the work in 2024, and held the whole project together through the continuity of its interior.
From the street the house reads as a low walnut roof over a stone base, with glass between. Double doors in a glazed wall open beside a channel of water into an entry hall of terrazzo, where a glazed atrium of palms faces paintings hung on a walnut wall.
Walnut ceilings and beams, white walls, terrazzo and glass on every garden side carry one language through the living rooms to the bar, the wine cellar, the media room, the yoga room and the office. The furniture was chosen to sit quietly inside it: a PH Artichoke over the living room, UP chairs and a black leather chair, a Barcelona stool at the walnut bar, two Papa Bear wingback chairs and a red-orange tufted sofa in the media room.
The main bedroom sits under a walnut beam, and its bathroom holds a stone bath cut like a block. A bedroom pavilion faces the main house across the pool.
At night the pool reflects the lit pavilion, and the house reads as one idea from the street to the garden. Completed 2024. Photography: Philippe Naouri Studio.
