Longhouse

Longhouse is rooted in the woods. Below, deep in the ground, wells provide geothermal energy to meet all heating needs. The ground floor stretches out into a sunny glade. A glassed-in south-facing pavilion embraces a heated swimming pool. An arm of the pool passes into the pavilion allowing warm winter access to the water. In summer, the glass walls fold away and the green-roofed pavilion stands on a granite terrace, open between the pool and a tall, thick bamboo fence. The main level is built on the forest floor. Terraces reach in four directions running through the kitchen; they afford every room access to the outdoors and a complete secondary circulation system. Above the main floor, separate family and guest quarters have a small tree house feel; they are joined by a bridge spanning over the kitchen and its pyramidal skylight. Reaching up, the house opens with skylights. Roof gardens insulate and protect and a wooden deck in the tree canopy offers a glimpse of the Cascade Mountain range.
