Locate in upstate New York's Dutchess County, JLF Architects designed and built this modern farmhouse for a retired executive couple.
The owners are former Calvin Klein retail store designers and in retirement they’ve created a conclave filled with character and rustic details.
Inspired by regional identity and local building typology, the building’s simple New England forms incorporate 21st century aluminum elements with 19th century reclaimed materials and details. The house is two and a half levels and occupies a grass-covered hilltop surrounded by hardwood trees. It was completed in 2008 and is 2,615 square feet of living space. The interior wood is reclaimed from old Amish barns and from a 300 year-old white oak that had stood on the family farm. Vintage fittings were sourced from salvage shops and an old style dumbwaiter carries landry to the washer and dryer in the basement. Other materials are reclaimed white and red oak; vintage standing seam roofing; mill finish aluminum windows; NY City subway-inspired tilework. It was published in the book American Rustic (2015).
