Designed by JLF Architects for a family of five, this award-winning contemporary house perches on a butte in the Teton Mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Inspired by place and using rustic timber and fieldstone in concert with, Corten steel and expanses of glass, the structure embraces the concept of a homestead for an effect that is at once rooted in history and punctuated by modern influences. The home comprises a series of buildings that step down the hillside, minimizing its impact on the majestic surroundings and capturing sweeping views of the mountains and the Snake River from nearly every room for the strong connection with nature that JLF designs are known for.

The design approach began with a response to the site—not just its topography and views, but also its regional and historical contexts—so it appears to grow organically out of the landscape. Also designed with legacy in mind for the growing family, created with Old World building techniques joined to high-tech construction by JLF’s design-build partner Big-D Signature, intended to last a century for current and future family members to enjoy through the generations. The design incorporates broad expanses of ultra-efficient steel-and-glass windows with authentic board-and-batten-style exterior siding of reclaimed wood and industrial Cor-Ten rusted steel for historic patina. Indoors, muscular steel beams provide a modern contrast to the living room and kitchen’s reclaimed-wood ceilings and rare American chestnut floors.

JLF Architects and Big-D Signature have delivered over four decades of expertise through timeless structures rooted in regionalism, integrity and simple elegance.
