The clients for this house are a small family. The design brief called for a house with five bedrooms and four baths. However the layouts were designed to be flexible such that three of the bedrooms could be reconfigured as study rooms per current requirements.
Layout
Although the form of a house is that of a “semi-detached dwelling”, 1 m wide recesses were introduced at the front and rear elevations so that the house appears to separate from its neighbour. The combined Living Room / Dining Room / Dry Kitchen space is given a generous floor height of 4.9 m. However in order to accommodate a Formal Dining Room for entertaining, the level of the Wet Kitchen and service areas at the rear of the house had to be lowered by 1.05 m such that an additional mezzanine floor could be inserted for the Formal Dining Room. A glass skylight is placed over the circulation core so that the staircase receives natural light throughout the day even though it is located away from the facades.
The architecture forms a backdrop for the display of the owner’s collection of art and furniture.
Fenestration
The front and side elevations face northwest and southwest respectively, thus various architectural elements were introduced to shield the house from the afternoon sun. Roof overhangs were added over windows at the 1st Storey, 2nd Storey and Attic floors, while louvres were placed in front of the windows at the 1st Storey Mezzanine, 2nd Storey and Attic floors.
Landscaping
Nature is introduced where possible - landscaping and a water feature at the 1st Storey, a dry garden at the Car Porch roof and landscaped planters at the Attic terraces.
Materials
The materials used include natural materials like stone (Barry Yellow Granite, Shanxi Black Granite and Misty Grey Granite) and timber (Teak and Walnut).
