Macrina Bakery’s new Maple Leaf location is the sixth location designed by Floisand Studio Architects over their 15-year partnership with the local bakery. In crafting the newest location in north Seattle, the architects balanced comfort, durability, and continuity with the surrounding neighborhood. 

The building, which had served as an office space for many years, required some structural modifications to meet the needs of a retail occupant. To minimize cost and construction time, the architects preserved existing roof joists and removed interior support walls while introducing new beams and column placements for additional support. Strategic window placement to the south brings in abundant natural light while retaining textured stucco on the exterior, pays homage to the building’s history. 

Inside, finishes were thoughtfully selected to balance softness and durability, seamlessly merging traditional and contemporary aesthetics. To make the space more colorful and approachable, the design team integrated a palm print wallpaper (designed by Macrina’s graphic design team) and custom lighting designed in collaboration with local outfit Resolute Lighting. The team then integrated painted wainscotting and plush textiles as a nod to more traditional design and to balance more modern elements. 

Floisand Studio’s meticulous touch extends to every detail, including the casework and railings seen throughout the space, ensuring that every aspect of the design aligns seamlessly with Macrina's vision for their newest location. The result is a blend of modern and traditional design, offering an inviting space for all who step through its doors.
