SE House

Set on a sloping site in Aix-en-Provence, Maison SE anchors itself to the northern hillside and opens widely toward the distant southwest landscape. Developed over three levels, it follows the natural topography to optimize views, sunlight and its relationship with the site.

Conceived as a breathing space, the house weaves a subtle continuity between interior and exterior. Interior gardens, framed views and a sequence of “Z”-shaped bay windows create a succession of thresholds and layered depths inspired by Japanese spatial concepts. Light, shadow and intermediate spaces shape a sensory experience in which the terrace becomes a true open-air room protected by a cantilevered roof.

The metal roof structure, free of columns, allows generous overhangs that provide solar protection while reinforcing the building’s lightness. Materials are rooted in the Provençal context: stone façades, aged canal roof tiles, an ipé terrace, red cedar soffits and walnut interior joinery crafted by local artisans.

Designed with a bioclimatic approach, the house integrates underfloor heating, solar protection and photovoltaic panels to ensure thermal comfort and energy performance.
