The county of Botkyrka, south of Stockholm, Sweden, decided on a distinct green approach when refurbishing and expanding the Malmsjö Elementary School. In line with decision, a number of new technologies were implemented in the school to reduce waste, energy consumption, and the environmental impact of the school. The county chose to go with the SolTech System for its innovative solution and superior design in implementation, not having a negative effect on the aesthetical appearance of the school. The SolTech System is installed on two buildings totalling 320 m2. The SolTech System is connected to the schools central heating and hot water production with excess energy production in summer used to regenerate the bore holes for the ground source heat pump. With the SolTech System, the school expects to reduce its need for heating and hot water production coupled with an expected higher efficiency of the heat pump installation.Part of the system, some 195 m2, was installed as a hybrid system with some 9kWP of solar cells installed. The solar panels were installed underneath the Glass Roof Tiles so that there is no difference in appearance from the other part of the SolTech System. The Solar PV installation is connected to the schools electrical system, reducing the electricity purchased, and excess electricity production is being fed onto the power grid and sold. The installation was completed in November 2010, and is currently in operation
