Masaya – A Seafood Restaurant Inspired by the Art of Thai Fishing
The name Matsaya means “fish,” and the restaurant’s design draws inspiration from the traditional Thai fish trap, reinterpreted into a contemporary architectural language that celebrates heritage while creating a striking identity. Located at Town Hall Sukhumvit, a vibrant community hub, the façade is designed with clear glass to connect inside and outside seamlessly. The iconic fish trap structure is placed prominently, visible from the exterior, making Masaya a landmark destination that instantly captures attention.
Upon entering, guests are welcomed at the host and welcome drink bar, set beneath a soaring fish-trap-like volume. The sense of arrival is enhanced by a glowing lobster-inspired chandelier, creating an iconic corner that invites guests to capture the moment and sets the tone for an immersive dining experience.
Inside, the layout is divided into flexible dining zones and an open kitchen, where guests can witness the chefs at work. The design highlights a dry-aged seafood showcase and curated displays of tableware, precisely aligned with the grid of the kitchen windows. This balance of proportion and operation reflects understated beauty—eschewing over-decoration so the focus remains firmly on the food.
Surrounding walls are adorned with earth-toned graphics of sea creatures, evoking a natural, coastal atmosphere. Tables are simple rectangles, easily reconfigured to suit parties of two, four, or larger groups, while woven chairs resemble the texture of fishing nets and ropes, subtly reinforcing the design’s central inspiration.
Lighting plays a pivotal role at Masaya. Thoughtfully layered and carefully controlled, it enhances both the ambience and the visual appeal of each dish. Warm illumination highlights the freshness and detail of the cuisine, while creating a welcoming mood that enriches the dining experience.
