Situated along the Sliema seafront, this apartment was conceived as an exploration of materiality, proportion and light. Overlooking the Mediterranean, the project transforms an existing residence into a contemporary home where architecture and interior design become inseparable, creating a sequence of carefully framed spaces that celebrate both craftsmanship and the surrounding landscape.
The design was driven by the intention to create an interior that feels calm, enduring and deeply connected to its setting. Rather than introducing unnecessary complexity, the intervention focuses on a restrained palette of natural materials and bespoke architectural elements that establish warmth through texture and detail. Every intervention was carefully considered to strengthen the spatial experience whilst preserving uninterrupted views towards the sea, allowing natural light to become one of the defining characteristics of the project.
Working within the constraints of an existing apartment presented both technical and spatial challenges. The design sought to redefine the open-plan living environment without compromising its generosity or openness. Bespoke joinery was therefore used not simply as furniture but as architectural elements that organise space, frame views and conceal services. A sculptural portal finished in dark textured material creates a deliberate transition between the entrance and the principal living space, establishing a clear threshold whilst drawing the eye towards the natural light beyond.
Materiality forms the foundation of the project. A custom-designed marble kitchen island anchors the open-plan space and is complemented by bespoke timber joinery that extends throughout the apartment in the form of integrated storage, television cabinetry and architectural detailing. Carefully selected furniture from Poliform introduces refined proportions and understated elegance, while lighting by Flos provides layered illumination that enhances the changing qualities of daylight from morning to evening. Leather upholstery, natural stone, timber veneers and woven textiles contribute warmth and tactile richness without overwhelming the restrained composition.
The spatial organisation revolves around a generous living, dining and kitchen area, designed to maximise both flexibility and the apartment's panoramic coastal outlook. The absence of unnecessary visual barriers allows the individual functions to remain connected, while bespoke interventions subtly define each space through changes in material, scale and architectural rhythm. The result is an interior where architecture, craftsmanship and furniture operate as a single composition, creating a timeless Mediterranean residence that balances functionality with a quiet sense of permanence.
