Casa Mia was born from the union of two separate apartments of a family with a child and waiting for the second, therefore the study of spaces and connections has been done paying serious attention to the child’s dimension. The two levels were connected by a resin and steel staircase that from the separation hallway between the living area and the sleeping area leads to the second level, where the master bedroom was placed with a reserved bathroom and two walk-in closets. A gap was opened in the wall between the staircase and the living room in order to allow the visibility between the two spaces, becoming a place of discovery but also of control. The staircase was thought up with the first two steps detached and movable, in order to give the opportunity to the parents to monitor their children’s access to the stairs. Two whiteboard walls, place of creative drawing, were positioned in the filter area between the kitchen and the living room and on an entire wall in the children’s bedroom.
The glass is a predominant element; in addition to the vertical cut on the staircase, a large fixed sheet divides the kitchen from the living room, creating a transparent and permeable filter space. Another sheet of glass 80 cm wide and 4 meters high was located between the two flights of the staircase thus allowing the passage of natural light between the two levels and also performing the function of parapet. The three bathrooms are all made of resin, in the master bathroom there is a large bath tub with some niches dug out in the walls, in the second bathroom a fixed glass separates the shower from the washbasin dug in a masonry surface and, in the children’s bathroom, two acid green bowls that stand out in the white resin and the cement of the walls give a touch of color. In the large terrace it was possible to obtain a convenient laundry room and to divide the space in a barbecue area characterized by the presence of a large wooden table which fits up to 20 guests and in a free green area dedicated to relaxation.
