In a world where the transition to sustainable transport is crucial, Proof of the sum is proud to contribute to this monumental shift with a project that not only supports electric freight but also champions sustainability in construction. In collaboration with Milence, the joint venture of Daimler Truck, TRATON GROUP and Volvo Group, we designed the European location concept for a network of more than 1,700 charging points for heavy-duty electric vehicles. Our vision unites technology, architecture, and ecology into a coherent framework for the future of transport infrastructure.
Sustainable Design
At the heart of the concept is a strong commitment to sustainability. Each charging hub is conceived as an integral part of the energy transition, delivering renewable electricity to freight vehicles while being constructed from bio-based, reusable materials. A defining architectural element is the family of laminated wooden arches and roof structures. These glulam components provide shelter and protection for both drivers and chargers, while also creating a distinctive and welcoming identity across Europe. Beyond their functional role, the wooden arches embody a softer, more human character that transforms technical infrastructure into a place of comfort and recognition.
Modularity & Scalability
The concept is engineered for efficiency and adaptability. Drawing inspiration from the simplicity of ready-to-assemble systems, the arches and other building elements have been designed as prefabricated kits of parts. This approach ensures that construction can be carried out with speed and consistency: up to four arches can be erected in a single day. By standardizing and modularizing the components, the design makes large-scale rollout across Europe both achievable and sustainable. Sites can be scaled from just a few charging bays to extensive hubs with dozens, and can be implemented on both new greenfield locations and existing truck parks.
Placemaking with Purpose
Our design goes beyond the technical act of charging. Each hub is carefully planned with drivers at the center of the experience. Safe turning circles, one-way traffic flows, and ergonomic parking bays ensure a logical and stress-free arrival and departure. A pavilion can provide amenities such as rest areas, fresh meals, and sanitary facilities, supporting drivers during both quick charging stops and longer stays. Landscaping, water buffering and thoughtful lighting add ecological value while also creating a comfortable, secure environment. These design elements acknowledge that drivers, as well as vehicles, need opportunities to rest and recharge.
Looking Forward
This project is only the beginning. With Milence, we continue to refine the concept, integrating landscape strategies and preparing for future charging technologies, while always keeping scalability and sustainability at the core. By combining innovative engineering with environmentally conscious design, we demonstrate how charging infrastructure can become an architectural product: modular, adaptable, and human-centered.
Through this approach, Proof of the sum and Milence are contributing to a cleaner, more resilient European road network. Together, we are setting a benchmark for the infrastructure of tomorrow: where electric freight and sustainable construction form the foundation for a greener future.
