Montrose Cultural Centre - Grande Prairie Central Library and Art Gallery

Set within the city’s downtown civic precinct, the project is conceived as a new cultural hub and rejuvenated civic focal point. The program houses a 35,000 s.f. library, multiple exhibit spaces, community meeting rooms and cafe.

Carefully situated in relation to the recently relocated City Hall, the building defines a new public green space in downtown Grande Prairie.

The gallery is designed as a two-storey structure with each of its levels interconnected visually as well as by a grand stair case. The building has a steel structure, clad with both translucent and clear glazing. Ample natural light is provided by clerestory windows. A warm and inviting ambience is created through the use of natural materials and brick.

Targeted LEED-Silver, sustainability is a primary consideration of the design. Energy efficiency is achieved through an efficient building envelope design, in combination with heat recovery and the use of energy efficient lighting and building systems. Day lighting strategies minimize the need for artificial light during the day.

Art Gallery of Grande Prairie

As the second largest art gallery in Alberta the Art Gallery of Grand Prairie strives to inspire, explore and preserve the world of art. They offer free admissions to their exhibits, tours, programs and activities to engage all ages. The Gallery presents on average 12 different art exhibits per year shared with the community and surrounding region, with large annual attendance rates over 10000.
