Open Envelope Studio as Landscape Architects

For this client, we took an unusable sloping backyard and leveled the highest area to create a grassy playspace with a gravel seating area aligned with the edge of the sod. We also took out the original under-sized deck space and created a custom cedar deck that is better suited for grilling and dining. Lastly, we moved the fence at the side yard towards the front of the house and created a workout space and secluded it with privacy screening using clumping bamboo. Thebackyard became immediately activated and we were able to connect the separate spaces with a steel grating catwalk and steel retained steps.

For the front yard, we refurbished the existing limestone retaining wall and steps by using granite gravel, additional limestone steps, and native Texas planting to create more curb appeal.

7. 1 ½” granite gravel for gravel mulch on backyard slopes

9. 2” Colorado rainbow rocks for backyard terrace gravel mulch
10. Zoysia sod
11. Texas Cut Hardwood mulch for planters
12. 5/8“ fairland pink granite gravel for front yard surface treatment
13. Existing limestone block retaining wall and steps
14. Texas native plants for the majority of new vegetation
15. Bamboo and bicolor iris (non-native plants)
