Architect Dudi Ohayon of studioDO has completed MS apartment, a 165 sqm apartment in a residential area of Tel Aviv, where a concrete cube and a wooden box define the spatial flow of the apartment.
The project was commissioned while the building was under construction, and the apartment was left with a completely open layout, with only its structural elements exposed. This allowed the architect to design the project with maximum flexibility, according to the client's needs.
The client's brief was to maximize the public space of the apartment, but also to allow them to have an additional guest bedroom when needed. The apartment is therefore defined by three key elements: an exposed concrete cube, a wooden box and a system of sliding doors.
The concrete cube, which forms the building's circulation core, remained exposed, and the main living space is wrapped around it. The third side of the cube leads to the apartment's private area, which includes a guest bathroom, home office and a master bedroom.
The wooden box, perpendicular to the concrete cube, is a multifunctional element in the open space. The box is located in the middle of the living area, serving as both a storage unit on one side, and an integral kitchen on the other side. It also conceals the main air conditioning system, as well as a system of sliding doors. Both systems are fully integrated into the carpentry box
A system of sliding doors is a dynamic element, placed between the cube and the box, allowing multiple scenarios to take place; the informal living area can become an additional guest bedroom, with its own ensuite bathroom, where the exposed concrete wall sets a background for an olive green floating carpentry unit, and the kitchen can be partly closed during cooking and preparation.
A minimalistic set of natural materials was chosen to complement the concrete cube, and it includes grey stone tiles, walnut wood box and olive green bespoke carpentry. The furnishing combines new contemporary pieces with design classics, alongside a selection of artworks by local artists.
The kitchen is composed of 2 elements: the wooden box, where the appliances and pantry are fully integrated, and a floating olive green cabinet. The cabinet spans seven meters long from the kitchen through the dining area, where a marble top Tulip table was paired with an iconic Fritz Hansen pendant lamp, and contemporary rattan chairs.
The living room, which opens to the main balcony, is framed by the wooden box and the concrete cube, which serves as a focal point in the open space. A light beige carpentry wall covers the elevator door, which opens directly into the apartment.
A spacious master bedroom is accessed through an additional sliding door, and is distinguished from the main living area by a parquet wooden floor, and is accentuated by ochre color bespoke carpentry wardrobe.
