Text description provided by the architects. Musikpark Mannheim is a versatile building that combines rental offices for start-ups, event spaces, catering facilities, rehearsal rooms and even a professional recording studio within an impressive, large-scale structure. Its expressive power and authenticity, situated at the raw interface between the city and the harbour, provide a significant impetus for further urban development. Despite the demanding specifications and the complex pile foundation, the building was completed in just 16 months at a cost of approximately €1,000 per square metre.
The Musikpark’s façade is clad in a profiled glazed façade, which is used in various configurations. There is single-skin profiled glass as a simple curtain wall, as well as double-skin cast glass – either in the stairwell or filled with transparent thermal insulation to serve as a projection surface. Insulation or fleece in various colours behind the cast glass meets the façade’s diverse requirements. The office spaces feature floor-to-ceiling windows with integrated sun-shading blinds, which ensure the efficient use of natural light.
The Musikpark’s façade reflects the diverse mix of uses within the building whilst presenting a cohesive image to the outside world. Through projections and lighting, the façade becomes an integral part of the building’s internal activities and events. Thanks to the high proportion of transparent thermal insulation, there was no need for additional solid walls behind the façade, which is not only cost-effective but also provides the opportunity for projections. The profiled glass used in the façade is self-cleaning and can be easily replaced if necessary, which simplifies maintenance and upkeep. Overall, the profiled glazed façade is not only functional and cost-effective, but also aesthetically pleasing and adaptable to the needs of the Mannheim Musikpark.
