My Precious Apartment

MISO ARCHITECTS as Architects

The apartment is located in the very center of Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, on the ground floor of a building completed in 2015. The 2 bedroom apartment came with white finished walls, beautiful wood flooring and 2 bathrooms, fully equipped and finished with travertine stone and ceramic tiles. The most valuable aspect of the apartment is the natural light flushing into the space thanks to the large windows.

The project title, My Precious, sums up the essence of the clients’ brief, their wish for a contemporary and elegant design that focuses on stylish finishes and textures. As they are residents of a seaside city, they also wished to season the design with a marine touch to remind them of their home – we respected this request by using turquoise and dark blue shades, such as the glass backsplash in the kitchen with a marine print, which became one of the most spectacular and memorable design elements in the whole apartment.

The open-space living room has an elongated shape, so we chose to treat the longitudinal wall preferentially by fitting a retro-illuminated glass framed by two laminated wall panellings with walnut texture – which turned to be the the most challenging part of the implementation due to the difficulty of assembly and execution details. In front of it a custom-made curved sofa was placed, which fits well into the remaining space and softens the rigid lines of the wall composition. All the fabrics of the sofa, dining chairs and puddled draperies are very fine, soft-touch velvet for a more elegant look. A custom-made furniture hosts the TV and the bioethanol fireplace on the short wall. We also chose to integrate in the design a series of objects including wireframe elements, with a subtle and graceful presence – a leitmotif which reoccurs in the rest of the spaces as well.

The kitchen design aligns with the recent trends launched in the Milan fair: doors with black frames and glass, elegantly illuminated from the inside. The kitchen layout is U-shaped, fronts being made of white painted MDF and dark walnut-imitation chipboard. The white corian countertop is in a spectacular contrast with the turquoise printed glass that mimics the depth of the sea water. Every detail plays an essential role in such a composition, as for instance the white Gola handles of the walnut fronts aligned with the countertop. The composition is completed with a generous decorative hood with clinging ivy plants on top. An interesting technical solution represents the foldable Franke kitchen tap that allows the window to be opended.

In the master bedroom the same walnut imitation chipboard was used for wall panellings as in the rest of the apartment. Brass accents such as vertical insertions in the wall panelling, metallic nightstandas and a massive mace-like suspension add glamour and personality. The bedroom also integrates a walk-in dressing with smoke mirror fronts. Atenntively selected embroidered bedsheets and velvet draperies in royal blue velvet boost the elegance of this space.

The second bedroom, destinated for guests, also hosts the office space. The desk and bookshelf composition is positioned to fit into an existing niche, contoured by wood and brass imitation lamellas, and illuminated with light strips. The extendable sofa is custom made, while the wall behind it is treated with decorative paint with embroidery pressed into it in order to obtain a three-dimensional effect. The stage is complemented by a pink armchair and a yellow suspension that sweetens the overall chromatics.

As previously mentioned, bathrooms came finished and fully equipped, so only a few interventions have been proposed in order to blend in the new design. Thus, a bright turquoise decorative paint was applied over one of the walls of the guest bathroom, recalling the marine theme, and a new furniture and mirror composition was also proposed. The master bedroom design was boosted by a special rainforest green marble and chipboard lamellas combo for bathroom furniture.
