concrete was asked to redesign the formerly known restaurant Onassis. The restaurant is a new member in the succession of two existing restaurants; delicacy restaurant “envy” and wine bar “vyne”. The facility for this location is a fish restaurant called “nevy”. Concrete created tranquillity by eliminating all unnecessary elements. The basic of the design concept is to create a space, which has the appearance of an old market hall. Marble was therefore a forehand choice. The restaurant exists of two parts, the restaurant and the raw bar. To create a visual separation between the two parts black and white are chosen. In the white part, the ceiling and floor are black. The opposite appears in the black area. There you see a white floor and ceiling.
Materials
Floor: The floor is made of smoked oak and is the original floor of the previous restaurant but treated with black oil. In the raw bar the floor is made of white marble (carrara bianco).
Wall: The walls are partly renewed and are provided with white marble tiling in strokes of 300mm and 145mm. Within this, various areas are left out to make room for the open kitchen, seating niche and laying mirror. Due to the mirror, the restaurant is visually enlarged and the guests can enjoy the view of the “Ij” even more.
Ceiling: Underneath the existing ceiling we chose to install a “lit” ceiling by placing a pattern of TomDixon lamps with a diameter of 75cm.
Furniture: Concrete chose to keep the connection with “envy” and “vyne” by placing the same furniture such as the revolt chairs (Ahrend) and lighting by TomDixon. The sofa’s and marble tables are custom made. Between every row of couches there is a service station and a table. This table has room for a dozen plants and serves as fencing. The fresh bar is renewed and is made out of the same marble strokes as seen on the walls. The fresh bar is fully designed in line with the bar. Daily, fresh fish is displayed so that the customer can point out its own fish. The fresh bar is part of the raw bar and is fully made of black marble. The sofas in the seating niche are covered with golden fabric. Due to this the customer is handed a special place at the raw bar.
The raw bar is designed in such way that the customer can look at the activities of the chef. The visitor is seated at a white marble table at standard level, which has a higher-level plateau that also serves as a drop off location for the dishes. Due to a cut-away in the floor the cook stands on the same level as the customer. In this way he can inform the guests about the courses.
Description:
Entrance:
The entrance contains a large visual of an X-ray photographed fish. The visual refers back to the visual identity in which the fish can be seen in various variations. The wardrobe and the stairs to the cellar where the toilets are situated are located at the entrance.
Direct at the entrance you step into the white restaurant. On your left is a doorway that leads to the wine cabinet. This space also provides room for private dining for about 20 people. The wine cabinet area can be separated by a velvet blue “yves klein” curtain. This colour is part of the visual identity of nevy.
The white restaurant,
In this part of the restaurant you can find the best view of the “Ij” and Amsterdam north. Concrete chose to place six couches, white marble tables and white high gloss revolt chairs cross-grained the façade. In this way guests can optimally enjoy the view. The couches have a “deeper” seating so that the customers can relax longer after finishing dinner.
Het zwarte restaurant,
In the back of the restaurant you can find the raw bar. In this area the chef is the main focus point. The raw bar experience is different compared to the white restaurant; the walls are made of black marble, the floor of white marble and the ceiling is painted white.
Besides the raw bar this area also functions as the distribution point of the kitchen and can be seen from the entrance of the restaurant.
