Conceptual framework Presenting as an insensitively reworked Queenslander on a compromised inner suburban site, this project presented many challenges. Although spatially adequate, the quality of space was poor, with no consideration given to climate, natural light, circulation and privacy.
Resolution Additions to the original house were demolished and verandas re-established. A two-storey contemporary extension was added to the rear of the house, offset to the north east to capture light and ventilation. Elevating the extension facilitated previously unavailable city views from the deck and living spaces.
Sustainability Achieving effective climatic performance for living spaces on the southern side of houses is difficult and complex. The combination of opening up the north eastern veranda and sliding the extension to the east of the site resulted in enhanced cooling from the north east and south west as well as facilitating winter sun entry to living and most bedroom spaces.
