Utz Sanby Architects as Architects

This home was a complete renovation of an existing beachside home, with a stunning location on Pittwater north of Sydney. The existing house was built in the early 1980s and was in need of updating but did not justify demolition. The decision was taken to keep the existing house and design a sympathetic addition to provide additional accommodation and transform the interior layout. This is a contemporary home tailored to our clients’ lifestyle, as they transition from the hustle and bustle of busy family life to a quieter and more relaxed life by the beach

What was the brief?

The brief was to completely renovate and update the existing home to give it a more open and contemporary feel. The additions included 3 new bedrooms and bathrooms and the alterations saw a re-design of the existing home to improve the function, look and feel, from tired faux federation to modern beach living. The garden was also re-designed to provide a beautiful contemporary landscape setting and some beach-side must-haves such as fire-pit ,amazing Bar-be-que and smoking station and outdoor showers.

What were the key challenges?

To work with the existing building and transform it without re-building it.

What were the solutions?

We maintained the exterior and as much of the internal layout as feasible, to reduce cost and waste. We designed the new additions to be sympathetic to the original form of the house with a more contemporary aesthetic.
