NY Carlsberg

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a world class art museum located in the centre of Copenhagen nær the Tivoli Gardens.

Henning Larsen Architects has designed the new extension for the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek as an independent entity within the Conservator's Court. The building affords improved storage conditions for the Museum's French Collection by virtue of special climate control and high security.

Standing as a 'building within a building', the new extension, with its smoothrendered exterior, contrasts with the renovated brick walls of the existing building.

The space between the two buildings is formed as a climbing, glasscovered stepped street, which leads to the three exhibition floors and further up into the light of the roof terrace. The new building also houses part of the Egyptian Collection, including a mummy room on the ground floor. The latter is accessed from the first floor of the existing exhibition building by passing under the stair street as through a tunnel to a burial chamber.
