Spatial depth and passive design in a Singapore home

Oku is a spatial concept pertaining to the idea of “inwardness.” It is introduced to create a feeling of depth and dimensionality in space. As one moves through it, attention is drawn inward, heightening the sense of exploration and discovery.

This inward-looking spatial sequencing supports a passive environmental strategy by reducing direct exposure to external heat and noise. Spaces unfold gradually around protected courtyards and transitional zones, moderating microclimatic conditions and reducing reliance on mechanical cooling.

Designed by Freight Architects, sustainability in Oku House is approached as an integrated architectural strategy rather than an applied system. Passive design principles, material selection, and spatial organization work collectively to reduce energy demand while enhancing thermal comfort.  

Through the use of high thermal-mass materials, natural ventilation, daylight optimization, and landscape integration, the house minimizes reliance on mechanical systems and supports long-term environmental performance within Singapore’s tropical climate.

Material aging and long-term environmental performance

The project began by understanding the clients’ interests, lifestyle, and philosophy, which are rooted in Japanese culture. As avid art collectors, their ceramics and pottery collections embody the concept of wabi-sabi.

As a central theme, the idea of wabi-sabi informs the selection of finishes, expressed through smoked brick, concrete, and balau timber. These materials were selected to allow patina to develop over time, contributing to the character of the house.

Material selection prioritizes durability and aging rather than surface perfection. The smoked brick, exposed concrete, and timber are left largely untreated, reducing the need for coatings, replacements, or frequent maintenance.

Courtyard as the environmental core

The open courtyard becomes the heart of the house, welcoming sunlight and rain into its core. Trees, shrubs, and stepping stones are arranged to filter heavy rainfall. It also serves as an air well, supporting thermal comfort during the day in Singapore’s tropical climate.

The reinterpreted shophouse typology supports passive cooling strategies traditionally used in tropical architecture. Narrow floor plates, internal voids, and layered thresholds enhance cross-ventilation and daylight penetration, reducing operational energy demand in Singapore’s humid climate.

Frontage, landscape integration, and climatic buffering

Elements of the shophouse typology are simplified to their basic forms and reassembled in the house design. The front features a symmetrical layout reminiscent of a shophouse, with two leopard trees positioned at each corner. These trees enhance the narrow facade while providing weather protection and privacy.

Planters are integrated along circulation paths, reflecting the client’s appreciation of landscaping. These elements serve as climatic buffers, incorporating trees and vegetation that offer shade, reduce heat gain, and promote evaporative cooling. Such passive landscape strategies enhance thermal comfort while minimizing reliance on mechanical systems.

Entry begins through a water lily garden leading to the entrance foyer, designed as a transitional threshold between interior and exterior. From the living room, the open courtyard is gradually revealed.

Transitional spaces act as thermal buffers, allowing occupants to acclimatize gradually while reducing heat transfer into enclosed interiors. The sequencing of outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor spaces supports natural ventilation and reduces cooling loads.
