Our Nature Public Art Installation

A public art installation at a police & fire training facility in Chandler, Arizona. The users of the facility planned for a gathering spot on the north side of a tall pre-cast concrete wall. With a desire for greater shade and a calming presence, the building owners sought public art through a competition and interview process.

Knowing the proven scientific data showing the ability for certain forms and patterns to calm people, we proposed a botanical theme to the imagery.

It took us time to develop the final pattern, though we started by talking to the police and fire representatives about their jobs. Much of their sensibilities revolve around the idea of duty- to serve and take care of others. While the badges they wear are symbolically shields, nearly all such badges contain some sort of biophilia; Garlands, an eagle, folds of fabric, and undulating edges. We developed the final art-pattern by blending the shapes of the badges with botanical patterns, creating a metaphoric tree out of the project- with three large forms acting as leafy canopies and/or very large leaves themselves.

By working in three dimensional software and utilizing parametric design software (with our design collaborators at Pattern Design Studio), we were able to quickly design and test variations to keep the installation within budget.

Although of large-size and complexity, by working with our fabrication partners (Southwest Fabrication) and the main general contractor for the construction of the building (Caliente), we were able to complete this installation in only seven months from design to completion.
